The CaSCo project, which is funded by the INTERREG Alpine Space Programme, recognises with the Alpine Space Regional Timber Award outstanding construction projects in the Alpine Space. Nominated are public and private institutions that procure or implement (partly) wooden buildings or urban furniture made from regional timber. Urban furniture includes wooden constructions like buildings, park benches or bus stop shelter. Regional timber means wood which derives from the region and is transported over low distances during the whole processing chain. It furthermore has to derive from sustainable managed forests (comparable i.e. to the Blue Angel-eco label).
The transportation distances of the wood during its whole value chain process play an important role as lower transportation distances cause lower CO2 emissions.
The projects are judged based on following criteria:
- Reduction of CO2 through usage of regional timber
- Innovation
- Transferability
